figure drawing sessions with John T.D. Murphy
DrawLosAngeles is a growing community of artists who come together for monthly ticketed figure drawing sessions led by artist John T.D. Murphy. Rooted in the traditions of classical academic drawing, these sessions focus on the study of the nude human form through structured poses and observational practice. Open to artists of all levels—from first-timers to working professionals—each session offers both a space to learn and a place to connect with fellow artists.
Each two-hour figure drawing session follows a traditional academic structure designed to develop observation, confidence, and technique. The class unfolds in three parts:
1-minute warm-up gesture drawings to loosen the hand and quickly capture the energy of the pose
2–5 minute quick studies exploring gesture, value, anatomy, and rhythm
10–15 minute sustained poses allowing for deeper observation and more developed drawings
All materials are provided, including newsprint and vine charcoal. Artists are also welcome to bring their own materials and work in any medium of their choice.
Artists of all skill levels are welcome—from first-time sketchers to experienced professionals. No prior drawing experience is necessary.
